COURSES
Bio 12 Animal Form and Function: This course is exactly what the title suggests. In the first part of the course students learn to construct a phylogenetic tree and to understand phylogenetic relationships among animals ranging from sponges to vertebrates. In the second part of the course, we will discuss topics in animal physiology at an introductory level.
Animal Physiology: This is an advanced course in animal physiology. Students discuss readings from the literature to supplement lectures in class. Some topics students enjoy discussing include pain reception in mice resistant to scorpion toxin, sensory systems and pit viper avoidance in squirrels, and interaction between gut microbiomes and brain development in mice.
Sensory Ecology: Grad course in which we discuss literature pertaining to sensory physiology and the importance of sensory information in animal communication, navigation and foraging.
Ornithology: In this class, we discuss bird ecology, bird behavior and species identification. The laboratory will focus on species identification as well as common field techniques used in ornithology.
Upcoming Courses
Animal Communication: This course will focus on the evolution of sensory systems across animals and signal production mechanisms.
